Kidbrooke Village came out on top at the Ideal Home Show Blue Ribbon Awards 2014 winning Housing Development of the Year with the full endorsement of the judges, calling the development a "good illustration of how architecture can enhance community living".
The Ideal Home Show Blue Ribbon Awards aim to recognise great design and innovation, setting a benchmark of excellence and offering consumers a guide to the best in building design, sustainability, community development and affordable housing in the UK. Kidbrooke Village was singled out as one of the best blueprints for modern domestic living in Britain today.
The judges took creativity, 'liveability', aesthetics, use of materials and technology, as well as the relationship of the buildings at Kidbrooke Village to the site and context into consideration, before naming the £1billion regeneration project as the London leader for 2014 new-build developments.
The judges, who included Stephen Hodder, president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Christophe Egret, principal of Studio Egret West, said: "This is a well thought out development, with an interesting mix of contemporary architecture and building types. It's a good illustration of how architecture can enhance community living.
"New homes, new landscaping and new community initiatives have changed the culture of a former sink estate to somewhere that is now welcoming hundreds of new residents. It's a dramatic transformation. We very much liked the fact that, unlike some places that become 'gated ghettos' for one type of person, Kidbrooke Village really does provide a variety of homes for everybody."
John Anderson, Chairman of Berkeley Homes (East Thames), comments: "Being recognised with this prestigious accolade and receiving the high praise of the respected panel of judges is a noteworthy achievement - the result of successful vision, collaboration and teamwork by all the parties involved in making Kidbrooke Village successful, from the architects and designers through to the delivery and customer service teams. This award is a fantastic endorsement of our efforts to make Kidbrooke Village an enviable address in south east London."
Berkeley Homes has described the development as a new village for London, and has carefully designed the scheme to create a sense of place and community, centred on open spaces and a village centre serving the needs of the local population. Once complete, the development will include four distinct neighbourhoods which seamlessly integrate with each other and the surrounding areas.
The Kidbrooke Village Masterplan, which was devised by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands architects, encompasses a vast 109 hectares and is coming to life as the scheme continues to grow and mature with every milestone achieved. The development is an entirely new London village with 4,800 new mixed-tenure homes, approximately 104,000 sq ft of commercial and retail space, community facilities, integrated healthcare facilities, sports pitches and leisure facilities, as well as 55 hectares of parkland and open spaces.
Kidbrooke Village benefits from superb transport links with easy access to the West End, city and Canary Wharf. Existing train services provide direct access to London Bridge in just 15 minutes as well as Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Victoria, which link to the London Underground network and the DLR.
