Artwork created by children from Wingfield Primary School in Kidbrooke was unveiled by the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor Mick Hayes, at Berkeley Homes' Kidbrooke Village development on 8 December. Over 200 children, staff and parents from the school attended the grand reveal of hoardings featuring their designs, which surround the site where the expanded Wingfield Primary School will be built. The designs are inspired by a nature walk through the development's parkland and green spaces which took place earlier this year.
The designs, submitted by pupils from nursery classes through to Year 6, were judged by Head of Wingfield Primary School, Ross Silcock and Woshil Shrestha, Lauren Hickford and Zoe Eselgroth from Berkeley Homes. The top three winning entries from each class were selected to appear on the hoardings around Ensign Street and Moorhead Way, where Berkeley Homes has prepared the site for construction to begin early next year on the new, expanded Wingfield Primary School.
As part of the major Kidbrooke Village regeneration scheme, Berkeley Homes is working in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich to provide the site for the new school, which will see modern classrooms and upgraded facilities six years earlier than initially planned. This will allow the school to significantly increase its provision of school places, moving to three-form entry.
Wingfield Primary School's Head of School, Ross Silcock, said: "This has been an exciting opportunity for the children, who were thrilled to create art and poetry for the whole community to enjoy and to be involved in the construction of the new school from the very beginning. We're all eagerly awaiting the completion of the new school, which will allow us to further enhance the children's learning experiences."
Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor Mick Hayes, said: "It's great that the children of Wingfield Primary School are able to learn about nature from their very doorstep, and the hoardings make a wonderful sight while construction takes place."
Councillor Danny Thorpe, the Royal Borough of Greenwich's cabinet member for regeneration and transport, commented: "Kidbrooke is a regeneration success story, with thousands of new homes now built, and new open spaces helping create a very attractive environment. The construction of a new primary school is a further milestone in the dramatic transformation of this part of the borough. By enabling Wingfield, a successful local school, to expand into new premises we are taking a further important step in ensuring that Kidbrooke is a sustainable community, with facilities to serve local people for generations to come."
John Anderson, regional chairman at Berkeley Homes East Thames, attended the unveiling and said: "It's great that the pupils have been inspired by the Kidbrooke nature trail and come up with such fantastic designs. I'm sure that they will be much admired as we carry on working on the development. We're continuing to work closely with Wingfield Primary School and the council to help expand a first-class educational facility and are looking forward to the benefits these will bring to existing pupils and the local area."
